How do I connect to my office Mac from home?

In order for you to connect to your office Mac from home, you need to make sure that it is properly configured. You can email CHASS IT ( chass_it@ncsu.edu ) and we will make sure everything is configured.

Before following these instructions, make sure that you have the following information on hand:

  • Your office Mac IP Address or computer name (We can provide that for you)
  • Your Unity ID and Password
  • Your office Mac username and Password (if they are not your Unity ID and Password )

The remote access protocols used by Mac OS X are blocked by the University's firewall and are not accessible to off-campus users. Off-campus users can follow these steps to recieve an on-campus network address and access their office Mac from home.

What kind of computer do you use at home?

From a Mac at home

  1. If you have not already done so, visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/chicken/files/latest/download to acquire Chicken (formerly Chicken of the VNC, a free and open source VNC client)
  2. Visit http://vpn.ncsu.edu and login using your Unity ID and Password. This will connect to the University's VPN service and give you access to on-campus networking resources.
  3. Open Chicken and make sure your settings are correct

    2. Your password must be set using the "Set Remote Desktop Password" application on your office mac before you can connect to it remotely. (This is not your unity password)
      * If you do not have the "Set Remote Desktop Password" application on your office mac, then send an email to CHASS IT and we can help you set your password.
    3. "Allow other clients to connect" should be checked to avoid some possible MacOS 10.7 (Lion) quirks.
  4. When you click Connect, you should be presented with a login screen as if you were sitting at your desk.
